Defense Hearings Examine Missions, Equipment, and Personnel

This week, the Sen. Armed Services Cmte. held hearings on the DOD FY 2011 budget. First, witnesses testified on budgets for the U.S. African & European Commands and U.S. Joint Forces. Then, the Cmte. focused on funding for the Northern and Southern Command, as well as the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program. The House Armed Services Cmte. heard from behavioral experts about the effects of deployment on children in military families.

Book TV will be LIVE this weekend from the 2010 Tucson Festival of Books on the campus of the Univ. of Arizona. Today, we feature a discussion on the U.S. and Mexico border with a panel of historical authors (4pm). Then, Dan Balz talks about his book on the 2008 presiden-
tial election (5:30pm). Later, New York Times reporter Timothy Egan discusses his latest book on Teddy Roosevelt, "The Big Burn" (7pm).

The Senate Homeland Security Cmte. held a hearing on the lessons learned and implications of the attempted Christmas Day bombing of Northwest Flt 253. The session focused on vulnerabilities in watch-listing and airport pre-screening systems. They also investigated how terrorist leads are tracked and used to identify potential terrorists.
